Strategies for Supporting Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is a two‐day workshop designed to introduce participants to effective strategies for supporting families with very young children (birth to age 5) who have very early/emerging skills) who experience social, communication, and sensory issues related to ASD. Participants in this workshop should have a basic understanding of autism spectrum disorders. Participants must attend both days of training.
Carol Burke, M.Ed., System Manager of the Infant & Toddler Connection of the Rockbridge Area, and Tracy Miller, MHS, OTL, Director of Rehabilitation Associates, will present this training. Registration fee includes two days of training and lunch each day.

Our keynote session on Friday will be John Toscano, CEO, of Commonwealth Autism Service on “The State of the State.” Come hear about the many changes and initiatives that are being undertaken in Virginia for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
On Saturday, our keynote presenters will be Press and Gena Barnhill, authors of Parents of Children with Disabilities. Gena is also the author of the book “Right Address...Wrong Planet: Children with Asperger Syndrome Becoming Adults.”
Limited child-care will be available on Saturday only. Registration (free) is required for each child. Please contact the GRVAAG at aag@ymail.com to request child-care registration.
Topics for this conference include Political Advocacy, Visual Supports, Assistive Technology, Self-Determination, and more. Local vendors and product vendors will be on-site.

Workshop Description: The prevalence of children with autism spectrum disorder continues to increase. Evidence has indicated that early identification and intervention can significantly improve outcomes. This session will provide a comprehensive overview of autism for childcare providers. Participants will be introduced to the core deficits of autism, early warning signs, and common screening tools. Participants will also be provided with strategies to discuss concerns with family members. Evidence based interventions and strategies for successful inclusion in both the public and private childcare environment will be discussed. A Certificate of Attendance will be provided at the conclusion of the workshop.

Wrightslaw programs are designed to meet the needs of parents, educators, health care providers, advocates and attorneys who represent children with disabilities regarding special education. The program is not disability specific.

Paula Kluth is a consultant, teacher, author, advocate, and independent scholar who works with teachers and families to provide inclusive opportunities for students with disabilities and to create more responsive and engaging schooling experiences for all learners. Paula is a former special educator who has served as a classroom teacher, consulting teacher, and inclusion facilitator. Her research and professional interests include differentiating instruction, and supporting students with autism and significant disabilities in inclusive classrooms.
