Assessment Teams in Schools

While a medical diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder is important, it does not always translate into next steps for educators, nor does it guarantee that a student will qualify for special education services through their local education agency (LEA).  Because of the importance of early identification and intervention for individuals with autism, Commonwealth Autism and the Virginia Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Program (Va-LEND) have partnered to provide training on our comprehensive transdisciplinary autism assessment process

The Transdisciplinary Team Process represents the highest form of team functioning which is respectful and collaborative, helps to build trust and respect, and empowers family members as essential members of the team.

The Assessment Team seeks to determine:  

 


TRAINING PROCESS

YEAR ONE TRAINING:
The team is introduced to the GOLD STANDARD ASSESSMENT TOOLS:

          

In addition, participants complete a series of training modules on a variety of topics including:

  • Team Functioning
  • Role of Related Service Providers
  • Family-Centered Practice
  • Report Writing
  • From Assessment to IEP
  • Evidence-Based Practices
  • Research Reliability
  • Advanced Administration & Coding

YEAR TWO TRAINING: 
The team becomes more independent but continues to receive feedback through on-site coaching which supports on-going participant knowledge and competency.  Additionally, a designated team member begins the process of reliability training.
